Declutter Your House Before Moving (Without Turning It Upside Down)

family decluttering and packing before moving

Moving sounds exciting… until you are living in the middle of it. You’re trying to pack, keep the house clean, manage everyday life, and somehow make your home look appealing to buyers, all at the same time. It’s a lot!

If you currently find yourself in this stage of life, here’s what I tell my clients: Take a deep breath, and start by making a manageable and realistic plan.

If you feel stuck, check out these 6 tips to get you started.

1. Start early and start small

My number one tip is to start earlier than you think you need to.

Getting ready to move is not a one-weekend project. And when you try to rush it, it quickly becomes overwhelming. Instead, keep it simple and tackle one drawer, one shelf, or one category at a time. That’s it.

Every decision you make now is one less decision you’ll have to make later, when you're packing under pressure.

2. Begin packing, but only after decluttering

If you want to get ahead in the packing process, that is great! However, always declutter before packing anything. When you’re unsure whether to keep something, ask yourself these questions: “Would I pack this and bring it with me?” "Do I want this in the new house?" or "Do I want to pay money to move this?"This question helps cut through indecision and keeps you focused on what actually matters in your next home. If the answer is no to any of these questions, the item has to go, and it might as well go now.

When starting to pack early (and with purpose), consider tackling these categories first: seasonal items, extra décor, rarely used kitchen and entertaining items, off-season sports clothing, and gear.

2. Declutter before moving will save you money

Decluttering before moving isn’t just about appearances. It directly impacts your money, your stress, and how smooth your move will be.

First of all, it can actually help your house sell more quickly. Buyers aren’t just looking at your house, they’re imagining their life in it. When your home feels open and easy to move through, it’s easier for buyers to connect with it.

Secondly, it saves you money on moving costs. Fewer items in your home mean you buy fewer boxes, you spend less time on packing, and you reduce your overall moving cost.

Lastly, it reduces stress during your actual move. When you declutter first, you’re not packing things you don’t want, you’re not making last-minute decisions, and you’re not unpacking clutter into your new home. This makes everything easier, from packing to settling in.

4. Reduce visual clutter to reduce overwhelm

What happens when you are just starting the selling process? A lot of people think their home needs to look like a model home all the time. Trust me, it doesn’t. Remember, you live there. The goal is not perfection; it’s reducing visual clutter so your home feels calm and functional.

Start by focusing on clear surfaces, fewer belongings overall, and rooms that feel open and easy to walk through. This is what buyers notice.

5. Do quick daily resets

Keeping up with the house while also living your busy life can be very overwhelming. To maintain some of your sanity, focus on doing a quick daily reset.

You don’t need to deep clean every day. A simple reset goes a long way: clear counters, put items back in place, and do a quick round-up at night.

6. Stage your home while living in it

Maintaining a show-ready home while living in it is one of the biggest challenges during the moving process. You’re balancing real life with keeping your home presentable, and that can feel like a lot. Make sure you view your house through the eyes of potential buyers, not as the homeowner.

The key to staging your home while living in it, is to have simple systems that are easier to maintain. My colleague Ashley (of Good Help Organizing in Jamestown, ND) breaks this down in a very practical way in her post on staging while living in your home. If you’re in that phase right now, it’s worth a read!

Moving is a fresh start (if you let it be)

Moving forces you to make decisions about everything you own. That can feel overwhelming, but it’s also an opportunity to start fresh. You get to decide what comes with you, what you’re ready to let go of, and how you want your next home to function.

If you take the time to declutter before moving, you’re not just preparing your home to sell; you’re also making your next home easier to live in from day one.

Remember, you don’t need to do everything at once. Start small. Stay consistent. Keep it simple! A little progress each day will make your move feel much more manageable and a lot less stressful.
